West Gate Bridge maintenance

Gordon McKay have maintained and supported the Department of Transport, formerly VIC Roads with the West Gate Bridge electrical assets for over ten years.

Gordon McKay has played a pivotal role in enhancing the electrical infrastructure of Melbourne’s iconic West Gate Bridge through both projects and the ongoing maintenance of its electrical assets.

Significant projects during this time have included the West Gate Bridge Strengthening project, and high voltage transformer and substation upgrades.

West Gate Bridge strengthening project

As part of a comprehensive upgrade, Gordon McKay was contracted to modernise the bridge’s electrical systems. This involved:

  • Installing new high-voltage substations
  • Replacing outdated low-voltage infrastructure
  • Installing a state-of-the-art security system featuring over 60 camera

This award winning project demonstrated Gordon McKay’s capacity to achieve outstanding results in highly challenging and hazardous environments. Safety was the highest priority at all times, as was ensuring minimal disruption to the may thousands of motorists who use the bridge every day.

In December 2022, Gordon McKay was awarded a contract for the routine and non-routine maintenance of the West Gate Bridge’s electrical assets, specifically:

  • High voltage – transformers, substations, kiosk and pumphouse substations
  • Low voltage reticulation system assets including main distribution boards and sub-boards
  • Bridge lighting and lightening protection testing
  • Security networks security cabinets, motion sensors, security cameras, manual gates, doors and hatches
  • Firefighting systems
  • Incident management system assets including tower and warning lights, aviation, flag and navigational lighting

This maintenance contract underscores Gordon McKay’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the West Gate Bridge’s electrical systems remain reliable and efficient.
