West Gate Tunnel project

The West Gate Tunnel Project (WGTP) is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at providing a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, facilitating faster and safer journeys, and removing over 9,000 trucks daily from residential streets in Melbourne’s inner west.

Gordon McKay won the tender to install and commission the electrical infrastructure for the east and west sections of the project. This has involved extensive electrical installation, including the construction of a new substation, cable installation, and the integration of over 1,900 Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) assets and 1,180 tunnel roadway lights.

Scope of work:

  • Installation, termination and commissioning of ITS assets, including traffic monitoring systems, variable message signs, and other technologies to manage traffic flow and provide information to drivers.
  • The extensive installation of electrical cables, spanning thousands of metres.
  • Inspection of underground conduit systems.
  • Upgrading the electrical infrastructure, which encompassed signal boxes, signage, traffic signals, and light poles across several intersections, local streets, and roads along the West Gate Freeway.
