Altona Storage Obligation project

Gordon McKay has been actively involved in the redevelopment of ExxonMobil’s Altona site since 2018, particularly in the conversion of the former Altona refinery into the Mobil Melbourne Terminal.

This transformation aims to enhance fuel storage capacity by adding over 100 million litres of additional petrol and diesel storage and to meet Australia’s Mandatory Stockholding Obligation and by doing so to create one of Australia’s largest and most efficient fuel import and storage facilities.

Gordon McKay’s team of 20 electricians was responsible for the electrical infrastructure and instrumentation for this project, specifically providing the following essential electrical services:

  • Electrical infrastructure: the installation and commissioning of all high voltage and low voltage equipment, upgrades and plant modification supporting the conversion of refinery facilities to terminal operations.
  • Safety and planning support: assisting with demolition and decommissioning activities.
  • Compliance with safety standards: ensuring adherence to stringent safety and environmental protocols.

Gordon McKay’s contributions have been integral to the project’s progression, ensuring both operational efficiency and safety. Their work was highly commended, receiving ExxonMobil prestigious President’s Safety, Security, Health and Environment Award for achieving outstanding safety record and rigorous environmental standards and meeting delivery and budget milestones.

Through their expertise and commitment to safety, Gordon McKay has significantly contributed to the successful transformation of the Altona site, reinforcing its status as a critical infrastructure asset in Melbourne.
